                      • Conference Hall Acoustics and Seating: How Do Chair Materials Affect Sound Absorption?

Conference hall acoustics are shaped not only by wall and ceiling treatments but also by the material structure of the seating. Seat fabric, foam density, backrest construction, and exposed surfaces can contribute to the auditorium’s overall sound absorption in different ways.

This effect is particularly important for reverberation time and speech intelligibility. How much sound energy the seats absorb, and at which frequencies, can change the acoustic behavior of the auditorium under both empty and occupied conditions.

A 2024 study published in Applied Acoustics shows that sound absorption in seating areas can vary according to upholstery construction and auditorium rake. The study also indicates that seat geometry and seating-area rake can influence the overall absorption behavior together.

Architects and acoustic consultants therefore evaluate seat fabric, foam, geometry, and layout within the same design process. As a result, seat selection becomes more than a decision about comfort and appearance; it also becomes a technical design factor that can influence the acoustic performance of the auditorium.

How Do Seat Fabric and Foam Affect Sound Absorption?

Acoustic seating materials influence how much sound energy a seat reflects or absorbs within an auditorium. Acoustic fabric can affect how sound reaches the underlying filling layers through its permeability and woven structure. Seat foam also contributes to seat sound absorption through its porosity, thickness, and interaction with other upholstery components.

However, architects should avoid simple assumptions such as “thicker foam always absorbs more sound.” Research shows that upholstery construction can significantly change the acoustic behavior of unoccupied seating.

Moreover, backrest height, seat position, and surrounding geometry can also influence overall sound absorption.

Do Empty and Occupied Auditoriums Behave the Same Acoustically?

Empty and occupied auditoriums do not behave acoustically in the same way because audiences contribute significantly to overall sound absorption. In particular, clothing and the human body can alter the absorption characteristics created by the seats alone. Recent research also shows that the amount of clothing worn by spectators can become one of the dominant factors affecting absorption in occupied seating areas.

This difference can cause reverberation time to change between an empty rehearsal and a fully occupied event. Therefore, acoustic design teams should consider different occupancy scenarios rather than relying only on empty-seat data.

Seat upholstery also plays an important role in the acoustic performance of an empty auditorium. Fabric, foam, backrest construction, and exposed surfaces can have a stronger influence on the absorption characteristics of the seating area when no audience is present. Under occupied conditions, however, the absorption provided by spectators can become more dominant than the upholstery itself.

                      conference hall acoustics

The rake of the seating area can also affect the result. A 2024 Applied Acoustics study found that sound absorption generally increased as the seating rake became steeper in both empty and occupied seating areas. However, the study also shows that the relationship between rake and absorption is not simple or strictly linear.

As the rake changes, the gaps between rows, exposed seat surfaces, and the geometric position of spectators can also change. These geometric factors can influence the overall acoustic behavior of the seating area.

Therefore, fabric, foam, seat geometry, auditorium rake, and expected occupancy should be evaluated within the same acoustic model. This allows design teams to predict the acoustic difference between an empty auditorium and real operating conditions more accurately.

Does the Acoustic Approach Change for Conference, Cinema, and Theater Seating?

A conference chair forms part of an auditorium design that supports speech intelligibility. In contrast, cinema seating and theater seating must adapt to different stage, screen, and usage scenarios. At Panelkon, we offer different cinema seating options according to auditorium size, acoustic requirements, and design approach.

These different usage scenarios also require fabric and foam combinations to be evaluated according to each project. Therefore, a single material combination cannot provide ideal results for every auditorium. Project teams should assess reverberation targets, auditorium volume, occupancy levels, and seating layout together.

How Can Panelkon Seating Systems Support Acoustic Design?

At Panelkon, we offer different material, design, and seating options for conference, cinema, and theater projects. In our acoustic sound treatment work, material selection according to the characteristics of each space becomes a key part of the design process. For folding conference seating, solutions that reduce distracting mechanical noise during use become particularly important.

Conference hall acoustics depend on more than seat selection alone. Material structure, audience density, auditorium geometry, and seating layout work together to determine acoustic performance.

It serves our valued customers in 16500 m2 closed area in Istanbul in order to eliminate the deficiency in the conference and cinema seat sector.

It has taken its place in the sector in a short time with its quality, comfortable and ergonomic conference chair products and continues on its way by growing its target.
